Photo identification and Happywhale

Whale photo identification

Can connecting with one whale connect someone with the whole ocean? Ted Cheeseman explains how Happywhale combines public photographs, expert review and machine assistance to help people and researchers follow individual whales. The conversation also covers data collaboration, migration, changing ocean conditions and the rights attached to contributed photographs.

In their own words

What makes a whale photograph useful?

From Nick’s question: “Like the days and the place and like what must happen before that becomes a Research quality encounter?”

So if it's a humpback whale, we want the underside of the tail. When a humpback whale dives, oftentimes you see the underside of the tail. And that has individual features that are very identifiable. For other species, it's different features.

Ted explains photo identification as part of a longer demonstration of Happywhale submissions, including dates, locations and human checks.
